The Beatles

Widely thought of as the greatest and most influential rock band ever, The Beatles - a quartet consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - enjoyed worldwide success and recognition. Their story began in their hometown of Liverpool, and The Penny Lane Hotel gives guests a front row view of some of the most historic landmarks relating to the band.

It is situated within the Mossley Hill area, which is in the heart of some of the most significant Beatles attractions in Liverpool.

The hotel itself directly overlooks the Penny Lane roundabout, which was a bus terminal in the 1960’s and where Lennon, McCartney and Harrison used to meet to catch a ride into the city centre. In fact, some of the rooms even have a direct view of the original terminal shelter.

Many of the places mentioned in the memorable song, Penny Lane, can also still be seen from right outside the building.

The two childhood homes of Lennon and McCartney, “Mendips” and “20 Forthlin Road” are just minutes away as is Strawberry Field, where Lennon used to attend garden parties and play in the surrounding woods with his childhood friends.

There are also many Beatles attractions within walking distance; including St Barnabas Church Hall (now Dovedale Towers), where the band used to perform, and Dovedale School, where Lennon and Harrison attended. John’s former school, Quarry Bank Grammar (now called Calderstones School) is situated just a 10 minute walk away.

The world famous Cavern Club in Matthew Street is where it all began for The Beatles as well as many other well-known bands, and it can be reached in just 15 minutes. Meanwhile The Beatles Story, a museum detailing the origins of the band and their journey to stardom is just 12 minutes away. Visitors to the exhibition can also experience replicas of the Casbah, Matthew Street, and The Cavern which authentically capture the early 60s.

We recommend, to make the most of your visit, that you take a private Beatles tour, with Liverpool Beatles Tours, who have been providing Beatles tours since 2004. They can pick you up from the hotel and either return you to the hotel, or drop you in town or another suitable place of your choice.

You can choose from a 3 hour to an all day Beatles tour to see the best Beatles locations in the city, under the expert guidance of one of their experienced Beatles guides.

If you want to take a short walk, then you can take a two hour Beatles walk, leaving from the Penny Lane Hotel, so that you can explore Beatles and local history, right on our doorstep. This tour is just £10 per person, and can be booked at a time to suit you.
